Relationship and sex therapy FAQs

Here are answers to the questions I'm often asked about relationship and sex therapy.

What's the difference between sex therapy and psychosexual therapy ?

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, for me, sex therapy is a broad term for therapy with individuals and partners where we explore and overcome concerns related to sex and sexuality. This might include exploring sexual identity, attraction and practice, or challenges around BDSM/kink, fetishes and fantasies. Psychosexual therapy is a specific type of psychotherapy that resolves the psychological, emotional and physical issues that affect sexual pleasure. It helps individuals and partners overcome issues like vaginismus, painful sex, difficulty with erections, rapid or delayed ejaculation, loss of or mismatched desire, and compulsive sexual behaviour.

You can book by getting in touch through my contact page. I offer a free initial video consultation where we’ll discuss what’s brought you here and whether we’re a good fit. Sessions are held online, so you can access support from anywhere in the UK.

What is online psychosexual therapy like?

Online psychosexual therapy works in the same way as in-person sessions — we meet via secure video and you can be in any comfortable, private space. Being online means you can access specialist support from anywhere in the UK without needing to travel. Many clients find it easier to open up from their own home. Based in Dorset, I work with clients across the UK and internationally.

How does relationship therapy work for non-monogamous couples?

Therapy for non-monogamous couples focuses on communication, boundaries, emotional needs and relationship agreements. I help partners navigate complex dynamics — including jealousy, time management, hierarchy and intimacy — while building trust and mutual respect. No relationship structure is pathologised here.

What are common challenges in kink and BDSM therapy?

Common themes include negotiating boundaries, understanding desires, navigating power dynamics, managing shame, and communicating needs within kink relationships. As a BDSM therapist, I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore these experiences openly and at your own pace.

How do I find training workshops for therapists on relationship diversity?

I run CPD training workshops for counsellors and therapists on topics including kink, non-monogamy, polyamory, bisexuality, sexual fluidity and cultural relationship diversity. Workshops are designed to build confidence and competence when working with diverse clients. View my upcoming workshops.

What training is needed for counsellors in relationship and sex therapy?

Counsellors typically complete a core qualification in counselling or psychotherapy, followed by specialist postgraduate training in psychosexual and relationship therapy. Continuing professional development, including supervision, is essential. I offer both training workshops and clinical supervision for therapists at all stages.

How can therapy help with exploring intimacy?

Therapy offers a safe space to explore what intimacy means for you — emotionally, physically and sexually. Whether you want to deepen connection with a partner, overcome blocks to closeness, or simply understand your own needs better, we’ll work together at your pace. Get in touch to begin.

What is the cost of psychosexual therapy in the UK?

My fees are £100 for individual sessions and £140 for couples or multi-partner relationships. I offer a free initial video consultation so you can ask questions and decide if therapy is right for you before committing. See full pricing and cancellation details on my therapy page.

Can sex therapy help with BDSM concerns?

Yes. As a kink-friendly BDSM therapist, I work with individuals and couples exploring or navigating concerns within BDSM and kink — from negotiating boundaries and managing shame, to communication within power dynamics. You will never be judged or pathologised for your desires. See how I work.

Is online sex therapy as effective as in-person?

Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person sessions for most people. Many clients find that being in their own space makes it easier to discuss intimate topics. I work exclusively online, which means you can access specialist psychosexual therapy from anywhere in the UK. Book your free consultation.

What happens in a psychosexual therapy session?

Sessions are 50 minutes, held online via secure video. We talk openly about whatever you’re experiencing — there are no physical exercises or examinations. I take a pluralistic approach, which means therapy is tailored to you, not a one-size-fits-all model. We might explore patterns, set practical goals, or work through emotions — whatever is most helpful. Learn more about my approach.

Is psychosexual therapy suitable for neurodivergent people?

Absolutely. I have experience working with neurodivergent clients, including autistic people and those with ADHD, who may experience sex, intimacy and relationships differently. Therapy is adapted to your communication style and sensory needs. You are welcome exactly as you are. Get in touch to find out more.
